Picture of the Day 2012

Picture of the Day: 2012. I try to take at least one picture each day. Sometimes they are exciting, sometimes not so much.

Lord of the Rings

Jan. 22, 2012

Mike and I got into a discussion about the timeline in LotR. I didn't believe it was as short as this web site he sent me to was saying. To prove it one way or another to myself I decided to reread the trilogy. I'm starting to think it really is that short. Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin leave Bag End on the night of Sept. 23, and at the end of the first part of _The Two Towers_ Pippin is riding off with Gandalf on Mar. 6. Grumble. I still haven't started _The Return of the King_ because I mostly answered my timeline question and I got distracted by other books on my ipad.

This boxed set of books was given to me by a guy named Don Schramm when I was 10 years old. He and his dad ran an auto body shop at the top of my street when I was a kid. My brothers and I hung out there a lot. I was there to play with the dogs--Schotzie a beautiful german shepherd and the one of her puppies they kept, Dawg. Don noticed one day I was reading _Stowaway to the Mushroom Planet_ and we started talking about science fiction and fantasy. I hadn't read too much of it at that point and he started telling me about _The Hobbit_. I checked at the local library but they either didn't have it or they wouldn't let me check it out (they wouldn't let kids check out from the adult section back then). Anyway, Don bought this set for me for Christmas in 1977. I've read it so many times I've lost track-- 30-something times. Thanks Don.
